Brian Kelly To Coach Notre Dame
ESPN is reporting that Notre Dame has given the nod to Brian Kelly to be its next head football coach. This seems like an interesting hire to me. While Kelly has seemed to prove himself in the college ranks, he seems to be much the same coach Notre Dame already had – a guy with a powerful offense and no defense. However, it seems Kelly is not a jerk, unlike Charlie Weis. This will make him easier to like. I think this is what is and will continue to bite Lane Kiffen at Tennessee (but that is another post).
This coach search does prove that Notre Dame has fallen quite a bit. No big names were really even brought in to interview for the job. I heard Joe Theisman (a golden domer) say that the Notre Dame coaching job is 24-7-365, and that is the only place where that is the case. Are you kidding me?!? Joe, are you drinking again? Have you seen football in the South? You know, where they play real teams and college football is king; where the coaches you couldn’t even interview are coaching. The coaching jobs at those schools is 24-7-365 also.
We will see if Notre Dame can come back. If Kelly simply wins the games he is supposed to win, then Notre Dame will appear to be “recovered.” Their schedule is very weak, so he should have a fairly easy job getting 8 or 9 wins. I just don’t think he is the right man for the job.
